Nerds on a Plane
I am not the type of person who likes to interact with strangers on public transportation. In fact I avoid it at all costs. I see someone trying to start conversations with those around them, and sit as far away from them as possible. You start talking to me on the train? I will respond as little as possible until you get the hint. However, things happen, and sometimes it becomes necessary. When one nerd recognizes another nerd and wants to discuss something nerdy, for example, is one of those times.
I was on my six hour flight from New York to Seattle the other day, and was watching an episode of the TV show The Legend of Korra on my laptop. For those not in the know, Legend of Korra is the sequel show to Avatar: The Last Airbender , which is essentially the most perfect show ever made. It is also somewhat sacred in the nerd world because so many people these days grew up watching it. I myself did not discover it until college where I marathoned all three seasons in one week while I should have been studying for my finals. Anyways, Legend of Korra is not as good as its originator, but still enjoyable. The main character of Korra is pretty kick-ass
Back to the airplane, The guy sitting next to me seemed as disinterested with everyone around him as I was the entire flight, but shortly after I began watching Korra, he tapped me on the shoulder and asked "Is that Legend of Korra?" He was very excited because, like millions of others, he had grown up watching Avatar and had welcomed the first season of Korra. However, he did not realize that there had been anymore seasons after that! I gave him some information about the next three seasons of the show. He was giddy, friendly and vibrating with that energy that a nerd gets when they realize they have accidentally have stumbled upon another nerd. He eventually let me get back to my show and we both were silent again for the rest of the flight, but it was still nice to know that one of my own kind was next to me on the plane.
There are so many things that can unite strangers, and common interests is always one of them. Super nerdy common interests, of course, are the most powerful forces of all.
