Skillet and Wolverhampton
So a Skillet is a Christian rock band that has been around for a long time. How long? It was over ten years ago since I last went to one of their concerts. A few days ago Andrea and I were looking for things to do that weekend when I saw that Skillet was going to be playing in a city only 30 min from us. Andrea agreed to go and so last night we found ourselves in Wolverhampton to go to a concert!
It has been SO RAINY the last few days, and somehow I managed to lose my umbrella. Go me. Anyways we got to the main train station in Birmingham. I like train stations. I am very comfortable with travel by train, so I was not particularly stressed about it. It was pouring rain though.
We met a woman on the train who was from Nigeria, and as soon as we had asked if this was the right train she wanted to know all about where we were from. She said she could tell we were not British from the way we pronounced our "r"'s (she initially heard us talking through her headphones).
Once we got to Wolverhampton...it was raining even harder! We were following my phone's gps and I had to use Andrea's already broken umbrella to keep it dry. Wolverhampton, however, was gorgeous. There weren't a lot of people around and everything was lit up. I am not sure about this, but Wolverhampton just seemed a lot older than Birmingham. The buildings were older, and it just felt like it had been there longer. We saw some really fancy hotels that looked straight out of the turn of the century, and many buildings that were a lot older, including a gorgeous church with a really beautiful garden.
When we finally got to the venue we had arrived a half hour before the doors opened. It would not have been a big deal except for the freezing cold rain. We stuck it out though and eventually made our way inside. The opening bands for Skillet were two local bands and...well they were okay. Most people did not seem very into them though...and when I say most I mean everyone in the audience basically just stood there staring at them.
When Skillet finally made it on stage they were AMAZING! The concert started with a violinist and a cellist out on stage playing, and it was awesome. It is very rare that an experience lives up to a childhood memory, but Skillet really hit it out of the park. They also played some of their older stuff (aka 5 years old), which was great because I havnt heard any of the songs off their new album yet. Hearing my favorite songs were amazing, and I only crashed into someone once! (It was Andrea, she yelled at me). And overall I had an awesome time!
After the concert we high tailed it back to the train and made it home around 12.30 at night. It was super exhausting, but we had so much fun! We can't wait to go back to Wolverhampton during the day and experience the city itself a little bit more!
Skillet is a band that has been with me most of my life, and it was flipping awesome that I got to see them live again after all these years!
